The Spike (2)
This Spike was purchased and built as a replacement for my first one,
lost to overzealous motor selection for conditions in February 1998.
I chose to make the paint job original, replaced the now-standard Masonite
centering rings with plywood ones, and in addition installed a type of
ejection baffle that is apparently called a "parachute compartment" to
eliminate the need for wadding. This parachute compartment was so
successful that I now plan to use it on all my large rockets in the future.
Even the paint job on the new Spike is identical to that on the old
-- leading a few people to ask if I'd gotten it back. Nope, this
is a new one, finished just in time to test fly before my trip to National
Sport Launch in May 1998.
